I was walking around Tsuchiura city hall the other day, when something caught my eye. A brand new place had just opened up and there was a line out the door to enter. I didn't really have time to check out the new place that day, but a few days later the Ibaraki Eats Duo went to see what the new Warabimochi Torori had to offer.
Warabimochi Torori
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when we went to check this place out. Luckily, there was no line so we both could stroll right in. When we walked in, we immediately noticed this wasn't an eat in place. It was all take out. There were a few staff members working an order counter, boxes of warabimochi, a menu on the wall, and that's it. My wife looked at the menu and thought about what to order.
The Menu
This is a warabimochi place so the top part of the menu has warabimochi. You can get a box of warabimochi in small, medium, or large. The other part of the menu is a warabimochi drink. I am guessing that it is some sort of shake with warabimochi at the bottom. The flavors are milk tea, black sugar, and matcha. Finally, the bottom right side is cream warabimochi. I honestly have no idea what that is but the flavors are plain, houji tea, and black sugar.
Small Warabimochi
Sorry, I forgot to explain what warabimochi is. Warabimochi is a jelly like mochi that is often eaten as a dessert here in Japan. It is cut into squares and then a ton of kinako (soybean flour) is dumped on it. Sometimes you also add some black sugar syrup in there for extra flavor.
That is basically what we bought at Totori. We got a small sized box of warabimochi, and were surprised at how much it brought. The warabimochi was delicious. It was delicious, cool, and refreshing. Great flavor but maybe this place went a little overboard with the kinako.
The Special Rare Cheese Drink
We also bought the special drink of the season. A strawberry rare cheese warabimochi drink. I highly recommend trying this drink. It has slices of strawberries on top, with cream in the middle, and rare cheese flavored warabimochi on the bottom. This drink was heavenly and filling. That rare cheese, which honestly was more like cheesecake, flavored warabimochi was maybe the best warabimochi I have ever had. It was a great drink to have during a cool rainy day, and both my wife and I were in warabimochi bliss. It is a bit pricey at 700 yen, but I think it was definitely worth it.
I am not sure how much longer the special warabimochi drink will be available, but I implore you to give it a chance if you can. It is a heavenly drink that will make your day. Also, buy a box of warabimochi while you are at it. They make great omiyage (souvenirs).
So if you are around Tsuchiura city hall and want to try some excellent warabimochi, why not give Warabimochi Torori a shot. Who knows, you might see me there, enjoying that heavenly rare cheese warabimochi drink.
Enjoy!
