It was a summer night in August. My wife and I just finished watching "The Suicide Squad" (great movie btw) at Tsuchiura AEON. During this time, Ibaraki was under a state of emergency so everything closed at 8:00 p.m. It was 7:00 when we got into our car and we started deliberating where to go for dinner. 7:30 would be last order at all restaurants. We would have to go somewhere close. I mentioned to my wife that there was a ramen place near by that had an awesome name which I had been wanting to try for a while. She agreed that we should check it out and off we went to Come On Ramen.
Come On Ramen
"This place has a great name" my wife said in the parking lot. Let me explain, the kanji for this place reads like this:
The first kanji 火 reads as ka for fire. The second kanji 門 reads as mon, which means gate. So it is a fire gate. Kamon sounds like "come on". Hence the name Come On Ramen. You might have seen the special on this place that TBS did last month. I unfortunately missed it, but a lot of my buddies saw the special last month and are interested in this ramen joint.
The Menu
The menu has a bunch of different ramen in it, but the most popular ramen seems to be the Sesame Seed Ramen and the Curry Ramen. I have yet to try the curry ramen but according to the menu, it has won an award at the C-1 Grand Pre. I have no idea what that is. I am guessing a kind of ramen competition.
I did order the sesame seed ramen that day. You can get the white, black, grey, or red sesame seed ramen.
Gyoza Menu
Even though my wife and I were there for ramen, the gyoza menu looked really interesting. From top to bottom:
Regular Gyoza, Round Shrimp Gyoza, Garlic Gyoza, Non Garlic Gyoza, Cheese Gyoza, Curry Gyoza, Curry Cheese Gyoza, and finally Nira (garlic chives) Gyoza. If you can read the Japanese on the menu, it really is quite funny. Non Garlic Gyoza says this is a good option to order if you are on a date. According to the menu, the curry cheese gyoza was number one so that is what we were ordering.
Nori Ramen
My wife order a lighter option than my ramen. She got the nori ramen. It had a lot of seaweed in there and it was a salt based ramen. It was extremely light and dare I say one of the healthiest ramens I have ever tried. The noodles were slim and it was packed full of negi. If you want a ramen that is not too filling, you should order the negi ramen.
Sesame Seed Ramen (Black)
The sesame seed ramen was quite interesting. It was thick and, you guessed it, had a heavy flavor of sesame seed. It also had a little spice to it which was a nice surprise. The chashu was a good thick slice that went well with the ramen and the noodles were great. Since the ramen was thick, it wasn't really pipping hot so it didn't really burn my mouth when I slurped the noodles. I enjoyed my sesame seed ramen and am interested in trying the other colored sesame seeds.
Curry Cheese Gyoza
After my wife and I finished our delicious ramen, we got started on the curry cheese gyoza. I took a bite out of this gyoza and this automatically became one of my favorite gyozas of all time. The cheese mixed with curry was already an amazing combination, but put that into gyoza form and it becomes something divine. Words escaped me as I ate that fantastic gyoza and I was transported to gyoza Valhalla. The gyoza didn't really need any dipping sauce at all. It was amazing by itself. I dare say, I loved the gyoza more than I did the ramen. The next time I come to Come On Ramen, I might just get five orders of cheese curry gyoza.
My wife and I really enjoyed our meal at Come On Ramen. The ramen was delicious but I think the cheese curry gyoza was the star of the show. I feel like ordering some now and getting it for take out. You know what? I think I will.
So if you are around Tschiura AEON and want to have great ramen with even greater gyoza, why not give Come On Ramen a shot. Who knows, you might see me there, picking up my take out order of curry cheese gyoza. Seriously, I am going there after I finish this post.
Enjoy!
