This is a little strange for me since I usually talk about food and I post on Friday night, but I do want to talk about two events happening in my town. With corona shutting down events left and right, I wanted to let everyone know about two events happening in my town of Tsuchiura. One is about beautiful fireworks and the other is about giant mechs.
Tsuchiura Secret Fireworks
Tsuchiura has a really well known fireworks tournament in October, but for the past two years it has been cancelled thanks to corona. So, the fireworks teams have all these extra fireworks lying around and they decided to just launch them randomly at secret times and locations throughout Tsuchiura.
The Tsuchiura secret fireworks have been going on since early January and your last chance to see them is this Saturday. This event is free and it is an amazing thing to see for a Saturday night. There is a catch though. The location is a secret so I am not sure where exactly in Tsuchiura the fireworks will be launched from.
I can tell you that for the past three Saturdays, the location hasn't changed. The launch area is near Tsuchiura JCOM stadium. If you head over to Minato-machi and walk along the marina, you should get a fantastic view of the fireworks. The other catch is the time. I believe it will start at 6:00pm but I can't be a 100% sure on that. The fireworks show will probably last for about 30 minutes, but I can't say that with a 100% certainty. The show is fantastic and quite beautiful though.
So come on down and experience a great fireworks show. It can get rather chilly so bundle up if you plan on coming.
Patlabor Event
The other event happening in Tsuchiura is about the anime show Patlabor. If you never seen the show before, imagine if the Japanese police force had huge mechs running around Japan. I've watched a few episodes of the show. It is an OK and funny show. For big Patlabor fans, this is a great event for you to check out.
Big Robots
There is a lot of concept art from the anime, different posters from the movies and anime series, a lot of information about the creators, and different props from the show like the cop's uniforms and the chair where the pilot controls the mech.
Miniature Mechs
My favorite part of the gallery was all the miniature mechs and the big robot at the entrance. It was a nice event to attend with my wife. She used to watch the show back in the day, so it was nice to see her reaction to the different mechs and characters. You can take pictures of the props and robots, but you can't take pictures of any of the art or drawings on the walls.
This event is happening until February 13th. The last ticket sold is at 5:30 everyday and the event closes at 6:00. To be honest, I think it might be a bit pricey. It is 1,000 yen a person. But if you really love this anime or giant mechs, this might be a nice weekend afternoon activity for you.
I hope you can enjoy these two events happening in Tsuchiura. I'll be back next week with a regular Ibaraki Eats post about amazing coffee in Tsukuba. Enjoy the robots and fireworks!
