It is almost October 31st! My favorite holiday of the year is coming! Halloween! I miss Halloween in the states but I do love Halloween in Japan. I have always had a good time every year. I know that this year has kind of put a damper on all our Halloween plans because of covid, but that doesn't mean we still can't have delicious theme styled Halloween food. Where can I get these Halloween treats you ask? Well, you have your pick, either in Mito or Hitachi Naka at my favorite place to celebrate Halloween, the Drunken Duck!
That's right! The Drunken Duck is having a special Halloween menu for this month. Everything looks ghoulishly delicious. The wife and I had to try these awesome looking Halloween dishes. So we decided to go yesterday to have our spooky dinner. The wife, a few friends and I arrived at the Duck with great anticipation. We were given the Halloween menu which has a special, 3 items for 2500yen or 5 items for 4000 yen. We went with the 5 and loved everything we tried.
The Mummy
The Mummy were these three baked sausage pies that tasted amazing. My group cut the mummies in half and everyone got to enjoy them. I highly recommend getting some ketchup on the mummy. It really enhances the flavor and it just goes well together. The sausage was spectacular and the wrapping around the sausage was a delightful little bonus. I am not sure what the eyes were made from. I want to say fish egg and egg but I am probably wrong on that.
Halloween Tortilla Dip
This Halloween dish was my favorite. The Halloween Tortilla Dip is tortilla chips
with edamame & spinach cream cheese dip. This was excellent. The baked tortilla chips were a perfect match with the dip. I could not stop eating them. The tortilla chips came in Halloween shapes like a pumpkin, a bat and a witches hat. The dip is the star of this awesome plate. The cream cheese mixed with that edamame flavor is something only the Drunken Duck's genius cook Jamie could have made to perfection. The spider web design on the dip was quite fitting for this Halloween dish.
Ghoulish Witches Hair Pasta
The Ghoulish Witches Hair Pasta is squid ink pasta with shrimp and tomato sauce. To be honest, I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this one. I am not a big fan of squid ink. But this pasta was great. When I tried it, I could barely taste the squid ink and tasted the delicious tomato sauce instead. The shrimps were a very nice touch as well. My wife loves squid ink and gave this dish a thumbs up. Speaking of thumbs.
Hand of the Dead
The Hand of the Dead was great. It has two of my favorite things, mashed potatoes and sausages. We ordered our hand of the dead with gravy. If you want gravy on this terrifyingly delicious meal, it is 100 yen extra. If you want cheese that is 150 yen extra. I am always delighted to eat the Drunken Duck's mashed potatoes, they have never disappointed. The sausages were great and had a lemon flavor to them that went well with the mashed potatoes. My wife kept saying this was the creepiest looking dish of all the Halloween dishes we ordered. I have to agree.
Jack “O”
Want something a little more spicy for your Halloween dinner? Then you should definitely order the Jack "O." It is spicy beef, cheese and tomato salsa quesadilla. The shell of this Halloween treat was a tortilla shell if I am not mistaken and it was perfect with the tomato salsa. It has a nice little kick to it and the cheese was perfect with this scary looking jack-o-lantern.
Halloween Pumpkin Crostini
Last but not least we have the Halloween Pumpkin Crostini. This was probably my second favorite Halloween dish. I think it is a tie between the Hand of the Dead and these amazing crostinis. Crostini is a toasted round bread which looks kind of like bruschetta bread. The Halloween pumpkin crostini is crostini topped with cream cheese,
roast pumpkin and herb sauce. The cream cheese was the flavor winner but at the bottom of the crostini was a sort of sweet sauce that mixed well with all the flavors of this tasty dish.
So if you are looking for a delicious way to celebrate Halloween this year, head on over to the Drunken Duck for a spooky and amazing dinner. This Halloween special is only available till November 1st so hurry and get your scare on!
