On a nice sunny summer day, the Ibaraki Eats Duo found ourselves around Moriya City looking for a place to just sit down and relax. My wife opened up Google Maps and it directed us to a nice little cafe called Knot Coffee.
Knot Coffee
Knot Coffee is located in the Yurigaoka area of Moriya city. It is about a five-minute drive from Moriya station but coming by bike is no problem.
At first, Knot Coffee looks like a big house in a quiet neighborhood but then you see the Knot Coffee sign and the parking area and you will realize that it is a cafe. Be careful if you use Google Maps. It led us behind Knot Coffee which is just a neighborhood area.
We parked our car and headed inside.
Inside
The inside of Knot Coffee is very cozy. I thought that the place recently opened because everything looked brand new but it has been open for quite a while now. When you walk in, you are first greeted by the register area that sells different coffee beans and coffee-making goods. You also order here. The menu is right by the cash register.
Outside
The outside dining area is very nice. I would have loved to have a coffee there but that day was way too hot and we wanted an air-conditioned area.
Sometimes Hi-5 Burgers sets up their stall here and sells their amazing burgers. So you can grab a coffee and a tasty burger for lunch.
The Menu
Unfortunately, the menu is only in Japanese.
Let me start with the food menu which has buttered toast, a Croque Monsieur sandwich, scones, coffee jelly, honey citrus cheesecake, affogato, and an espresso ice cream sandwich. I should also tell you that the cheesecake and cakes change every month or every two months.
Next, we come to the coffee menu. The espresso part of the menu has the usual Americano, cappuccino, lattes, etc. The other drinks section has an espresso banana smoothie, organic apple juice, milk, and soy milk. The filter coffee section has the Sai Blend and Yui Blend which are the specialties of Knot Coffee. Then there are the seasonal coffees which change with the seasons. The adds section is stuff you can add to your coffee like vanilla ice cream and or one shot of espresso.
YUI Blend
This is one of the recommended blends for Knot Coffee and it was my wife's order. What surprised me about her coffee was she got a scoop of vanilla ice cream, not a packet of sugar. She let me try a sip and I have to say that the Yui Blend had a good balance between strength and flavor. It tasted like a coffee to have on a day where you had nothing going on and you just wanted to sit back and relax. That being said, the ice cream completely changed the taste. I don't know how this coffee does it but getting a spoonful of vanilla ice cream and mixing it with the coffee made the coffee a little sweeter but it also changed it significantly. It was like a different coffee. I don't mean this in a bad way, it was very tasty. The sweet vanilla and the bitterness of the coffee mix together as a dynamic duo to make the YUI blend taste even better. My wife and I wouldn't mind having this coffee again.
Scones
What goes well with a hot cup of coffee? How about some pipping hot scones? Our scones brought some fresh cream and jam for our scone-spreading delight. I believe our jam was blueberry. Spreading that jam and cream onto our pipping hot scone and taking a bite made our coffee stop that much better. The hard outside of the scone with the fluffy inside was perfect. If you do decide to grab a coffee from Knot Coffee, I suggest getting some scones. They will go perfectly with your coffee.
Espresso Ice Cream Sandwich
This. This right here is A coffee dessert. It was fantastic. This ice cream sandwich brought two large cookies and delicious espresso ice cream in the middle. Everything went so well together, it was like an amazing dream. Getting that strong cold espresso flavor with those sweet cookies made my day. Sure, the downside was that after a few bites the ice cream was falling out between the two cookies, but that didn't matter. Even the espresso ice cream between my fingers was a welcome treat. My hands smelled like espresso when we left and I don't mind that one bit. This dessert was amazing, and my wife almost ordered another.
Knot Coffee is a great relaxing coffee break during your either busy day or day off. The cafe has a very relaxed atmosphere, great coffee, and delicious desserts to help you get into that chilled-out coffee zone. I hope to go back sometime soon to try their other coffees and cakes.
So if you are in Moriya and need a coffee break, why not give Knot Coffee a try? Who knows, you might see me there, sipping some coffee and biting into that amazing espresso ice cream sandwich.
Enjoy!
