Side Note: Domino's Pizza Rice Bowl!?

You read that right. Domino's Japan has pizza rice bowls on their menu. The first time I heard about these rice bowls, my first thought was that I had to try it. Well, a few weeks ago on a lovely Sunday evening, I was at home and decided to get some Domino's rice bowls delivered to the wife and myself for dinner. Onward to this pizza rice bowl adventure.

The Pizza Rice Bowl

There are seven different pizza rice bowls to choose from:

The Domino's Deluxe

The Garlic Master

The Charcoal Grilled Chiki-Teri

The Goryeo Galbi

The Char-Grilled Beef

The Seafood Special with white sauce

The 5 Cheese Bowl

The wife and I ended up chosing the Domino's Deluxe pizza rice bowl and the charcoal grilled chiki-teri. When our order finally arrived, I thought the rice bowl box was cute but a little smaller than I hoped. We opened our rice bowl boxes and were ready to dig in.

Domino's Deluxe Pizza Rice Bowl

First up was the Domino's Deluxe pizza rice bowl. It looked amazing and I couldn't wait to have that cheesy looking delight. I got a fork full of cheese, pepperoni and rice and gave it a try. It was good, weird, but good. I have had the Domino's Deluxe pizza quite a number of times but to have rice instead of pizza dough brought a shock to my system.

As you can see from this picture, the bowl really isn't that deep. There is a lot of delicious meat and cheese in this rice bowl but I honestly prefer all of that on a pizza. This rice bowl wasn't bad at all but I kept thinking that I wanted an actual pizza instead.

Charcoal Grilled Chiki-Teri Pizza Rice Bowl

Chiki-Teri means chicken teriyaki and it actually worked out a lot better in this rice bowl. The wife loved this rice bowl way more than the Domino's Deluxe rice bowl and I had to agree. The Chiki-Teri works well on a pizza and a rice bowl. Getting a big piece of teriyaki chicken with cheese and rice was delightful. I definitely recommend this pizza rice bowl if you are interested in trying the pizza rice bowls.

This was an interesting experience for the wife and I. We enjoyed our pizza rice bowls and thought this was a nice little addition to the Domino's menu. Though if you ask me, would you order it again? I would have to say no. As good as these rice bowls were, I have two problems with them.

First, the size. These rice bowls are almost the size of a Domino's medium size pizza. That is a small by American standards.

Second, the price. They are expensive in my opinion. Most of the pizza rice bowls are more than 1000 yen. Sure, they are cheaper if you do pick up but what if you want delivery.

I just feel I would be happier and it would be worth my yen if I order a pizza. Especially on Sundays and Wednesdays when Domino's has that buy 3 pizzas for around 2,600 yen deal. I don't regret ordering these rice bowls, I am glad I got to try them. But this was a one time deal.

What do you think of Domino's pizza rice bowls? Will you be trying one? I would love to hear from my fellow Ibarakians. Send me a comment on the blog or on my Facebook post.
