Go Go Curry has come to Ibaraki! I never thought I would hear myself say that. If you had asked me a while back, "Ibaraki Eats guy, do you think Go Go Curry will ever come to Ibaraki?" I would have flat out said no. The closest Go Go Curry is in Chiba and Tokyo and that is it. But a co-worker of mine who lives in the Kandatsu area told me that a Go Go Curry opened up at the end of April. I was in shock to hear this and told the wife about it. She has never tried Go Go Curry and really wanted to give it a go. So off we went to try some Kanazawa style curry.
Go Go Curry
I will be honest, I was very hesitant to go to this place. I went to Go Go Curry in Akihabara once and to be honest, I wasn't that impressed. I felt like there was way more rice then curry in the dish which I am not too fond of. But the wife wanted to try it and something inside myself told me to give Go Go Curry another chance. We arrived at the Kandatsu location which is very near the Coca cola factory in that area. We wanted to get there at around five to beat the dinner crowd and that happened to be a very smart decision. When we were leaving Go Go Curry, there was already a line out the door. Once we walked in, we were asked by the staff to select what we wanted to eat from the vending machine menu.
The Menu
The menu is pretty big so I will try to break it down for everyone in English. Most of the curries come in small, medium, large and extra large. The number one is the Roast Katsu Curry, the number two is the Chicken Katsu Curry, the number three is the Shrimp Fried Curry, the number four is the Goriemon (I have no idea what this is), the number five is the Goriemon curry (still no idea what this is), the number six is the Sausage Curry, the number seven is the Hisho curry (I think this means winning curry), the number eight is the Go Go curry which I believe is just the regular curry with no added katsu, the number 9 is the Major Curry, and finally the number 10 is the Major Curry but the size reads WCC. I am not sure what that means but I am afraid to find out. As for the bottom of the vending machine menu, the green buttons are just toppings you can add like cheese, chicken or a katsu of some kind. The blue bottoms are all drinks and the pink buttons are Go Go Curry's curry packs that you can take home.
A lot of Covid precautions
When I sat down at our table, I immediately felt that Go Go Curry was taking Covid pretty seriously. There were long sheets of plastic hanging from the ceiling near each table to divide and protect all the customers enjoying their curry. Points to you Go Go Curry for looking out.
I didn't appreciate the TV though. It played Go Go Curry propaganda non-stop. It wasn't bad at first but it got annoying after a while.
Roast Katsu Curry
Finally, our curry arrived. The wife and I ordered the same curry, the Roast Katsu Curry. She was really surprised at the color of the curry and that we were eating our curry with a fork rather than a spoon. She took one bite of her curry and really liked it. Then it was my turn. I was really glad that I had more curry on my plate than the first time I tried Go Go Curry. I got a fork full of katsu, curry and rice and ate it in one go. The curry was pretty good. Not the best curry I have ever had but good. Not very spicy but not completely without spice. The roast katsu was impressive though. It was a bit small but I did order the medium. The outer fried skin had a good crisp level to it and the pork was tender and tasty. This was a much better experience than my first time.
After we finished our curry we went by the crowd that was forming at the entrance and headed home. I really did enjoy my curry dinner at Go Go Curry and I will be going back to try some of their other dishes. I do like Go Go Curry but if you asked me to choose between Go Go Curry and Coco Ichiban, I would choose Coco Ichiban. Coco Ichiban has more options and I think the curry is better.
Nevertheless, I really think you should give Go Go Curry a chance if you have never had it. It isn't expensive and it is good curry. Plus, I think the katsu is great and you will come to enjoy it as well.
For those of you have had both curries. I would love to hear your opinion. Which do you prefer, Go Go Curry or Coco Ichiban?
