Burrito Truck!

Burritos. They are amazing, delicious, and quite filling. But they are a rareity in Ibaraki. So far I have only found ONE place in Mito that does burritos welll, To Mecca. (I wrote about this place last year.) But now, I found a food truck that travels around and does some pretty good burritos. That food truck is called Food Truck Ponkey.

Hitachi Naka Festival

On an unusually cool night in August, my wife and I were checking out the Hitachi Naka Festival. This festival was great and we were having a good time. Then, in a parking lot full of food trucks and stalls, I spotted Ponkey, and headed straight for it to grab me a burrito.

Food Truck Ponkey

Let me back up a bit. I had heard about Ponkey from my wife who found them on Instagram. She told me they were based in Ajigaura Beach during the summer. I love Ajigaura Beach and often swim there during summer. But Ponkey isn't there every day and they do move around. My schedule and Ponkey's schedule never matched up. Luckily, I found them in the festival and when I took a picture, the cook waved at me.

The Menu

As you can see, there is a drinks menu and a food menu. The drinks menu includes: mostly soft drinks like cola, Red Bull, and Ramune to name a few. There are also smoothies; banana, berry, and mango.

The food menu includes: full burrito, half burrito, combo (no idea what that is), fries, and sausage.

We were there for burritos so that is what we ordered.

Burrito Time!

So, how was the burrito? Delicious but different. It is hard to explain. It tastes like it is carefully balanced with Tex-mex and it has its own Japanese spin to it. Which isn't a bad thing. I do wish it had more meat in it, but other than that I really liked the burrito. The beans and cheese were fantastic. So much cheese, I was a happy camper. The tortilla was toasted and very tasty. The burrito had a small spicy kick to it, but it was very small. All in all, we both really liked this burrito and wanted to have it again in the near future.

I hope to have one of Ponkey's burritos again in either an event or at their home base in Ajigaura. Hopefully, before the summer is over.

So if you are in the mood for a delicious burrito and are looking for a lunch option after swimming in Ajigaura, why not give Ponkey a chance? Who knows, you might see me there, enjoying a burrito in the hot summer sun.

Enjoy!
