One fine spring day, my wife's beauty salon was having a celebration of sorts. The party was catered by a professional company that I honestly forgot about after the party. But there was one food truck by the entrance that I never forgot about. They made donuts, but not just any donuts, round delicious mochi like donuts. I was able to try their donuts that day, but I was so busy helping my wife out that I didn't take pictures or get any information on the amazing donut truck. Then they were gone. But a few weeks ago, at the Hitachinaka Coffee Festival, I found this donut truck and am finally able to talk about Magnet House.
Magnet House
Magnet House is a donut food truck that mainly travels around the Hitachinaka and Mito areas for events. It is run by two ladies that are masters of the ball donut craft.
A few things to know about Magnet House. First, whatever event they go to, they will be sold out after a few hours so make sure to visit them first. I had actually found them at two previous events and they were already sold out by the time I got to them.
Secondly, you will have to wait for your donuts. They don't serve premade stuff. Everything is fresh and warm.
As I wrote early, I found Magnet House at the Hitachinaka Coffee Festival. I lined up and ordered my donuts. The truck was so swamped with orders, the staff said to come back in thirty minutes to pick up my order. Actually, the whole festival was like that. If you wanted coffee you had to wait an hour.
The Menu
Magnet House has two options for round donuts. A lollipop style round donut and round donuts in a cup. Unfortunately, during the coffee festival, there were no lollipop style donuts available.
You can also get your ball donuts with ice cream or add extra toppings. Something I should have done. Also, the menu is in both English and Japanese! Except the extra toppings part which has cream, vanilla ice cream.
Zakuzaku Choco
Another thing I forgot to mention was that my wife was working during the festival. So after I left the festival, I went to her beauty shop and brought her a snack of delicious round donuts. She let me have one and I am so glad she did. I should have ordered a medium sized cup because I wanted more, way more. The chocolate seemed to have been coated onto the donut. The mix of that delicious chocolate with that warm, freshly made dough was exceptional.
Caramelized Nuts
This was my order and again, I wish I ordered a medium sized cup. The caramel flavor with the fluffy fried dough was amazing. I couldn't stop eating these donuts and when they were gone I wanted more. I still want more, even while writing this post. I do wish the balls were a bit bigger but that is my only negative thought on these balls of next level donuts.
Magnet House is a great addition to any event that is being held in Ibaraki. The ladies of Magnet House are truly a master of their craft. I bow to their donut making skills and will always ask for more. Yes, the balls could be a little bigger, and yes, you need a lot of patience to try these magical ball donuts, but I think they are worth it. I hope to see you again soon Magnet House.
So if you see a light blue truck at an event serving delicious smelling donuts, run don't walk to Magnet House. Who knows, you might see me there, in front of the truck trying to buy ten medium sized cups of donuts.
Enjoy!
