French fries, or just fries, or Freedom Fries like some of us Americans call it. (Yeah, I don't have a rational explanation for that) Fries are incredible. They come in burger sets or as a one-plate snack or appetizer. Then Canada changed the fries game by inventing Poutin. They put cheese curds and gravy on fries and it was an incredible invention. Since then, many masters of the art of fries have been cooking up different combinations to please our fries craving. One food truck in Ibaraki will not only please your fries craving, but it will take it to a new level. That food truck is called Bolilian.
Food Truck Bolilian
Bolilian is a fries food truck that travels around Ibaraki bringing joy to all fry lovers. The truck is usually in Southern Ibaraki. You can find it at different events around Tsukuba or Tsuchiura. They also frequent the Tsukuba Village Market and are usually at the Namiki Mujirushi on Fridays.
I first came upon this food truck at a Marchee event in Tsuchiura last spring. I wondered what Bolilian meant and wanted to check it out. I completely forgot to ask the meaning of Bolilian when I saw the menu and a picture of the fries.
The Menu
Great news my fellow Ibarakians! The menu is in both English and Japanese. Both menus are the same except for the seasonal fries. You will have to ask the owner of the food truck what the seasonal fries are. He will happily tell you and describe it to you in detail.
The Sizes
After you select your fries, you have two choices when it comes to size. The cup size is pictured on the left and the box size is pictured on the right.
Sour Cream and Onion
The first time I tried Bolilian, I ordered their sour cream and onion fries. This came with fries (of course), wedge-style to be exact. Actually, all of Bolilian's fries seem to be wedge-style. Then, there is creamy sour cream poured on top of the fries with some negi.
When I first looked at my order, I was transfixed by how beautiful it looked. I have rarely had something like this in Ibaraki. Then I took a wedge with sour cream on it and bit into it. The sour cream was heavenly. The cold sour cream with the pipping hot wedge was perfection. The negi was a must for this fries dish. It really brought out the whole sour cream and onion flavor. After having these fries, I vowed to try the rest of Bolilian's menu.
Roast Beef and Gravy
The second time I had Bolilian, I tried their Roast Beef and Gravy Fries. This menu item is very popular. It usually sells out fast at events so I suggest getting to Bolilian early so you can try it. You have the fries on the bottom with fresh roast beef and small-cut onions on top. My advice, wrap a piece of roast beef around a piping hot fry. It is a delightful flavor that you won't forget. The gravy is kind of light compared to all the other flavors, but this mixture of meat and potato is great for any occasion.
Garlic Shrimp (Seasonal)
The third time I had Boilian, I got my hands on their Garlic Shrimp Fries. I tried these fries in July. When this post is released, I believe this menu item will no longer be available. So how were the fries? The shrimp was good but the garlic sauce is where it's at. The garlic sauce with those fat fresh wedge fries was a real treat. I got a piece of shrimp and put it on top of a fry, and got some garlic sauce on there. It was magical. I guess I will have to wait till this fry combination is back on the menu.
It is always a pleasure to grab some fries at Food Truck Boilian. Some of you might be asking, why didn't you mention your wife? Unfortunately, she has yet to try Boilian's fries. I don't want to bring her soggy fries from takeout, so I want her to try them fresh at an event. She really wants to try these amazing fries and I have made it my mission to take her to an event where Boilian is at.
So if you are at Mujirushi or an event, are in the mood for some good fries, and see a white truck with a very friendly and talented fryer, that would be Food Truck Boilian. You can grab some amazing fries with different toppings. Who knows, you might see me there, enjoying a cup of fries with some delicious roast beef.
Enjoy!

Update
Cream Cheese and Chili Sauce
Bolilian came to the Tsuchiura Kirara Festival two weeks ago. Of course, they were my first stop at the festival. During lunchtime, I headed to where Bolilian was parked and got their cream cheese and chili sauce fries. This is one of my favorites. The cream cheese with that sweet spicy chili sauce was a perfect combination with my fries. It was very filling and just lovely. My hands were a mess but I didn't mind at all.
Curry Mayo
Good news everyone! My wife got to try Bolilian! She tried Bolilian during the Kirara Festival. That's right. I went to Bolilian twice in one day. She wanted to try the curry mayo fries. As you can see from the picture, we got the box size. My wife tried a fry and was impressed by how tasty and fresh it was, all be it a little too hot. The curry mayo sauce was a nice addition to our box of fries. It isn't my favorite menu item but I liked it. My wife has made the decision to try the rest of Bolilian's menu items. I can certainly get behind that decision.
Hope to see you soon Bolilian!
