It is October so you know what that means, Halloween! Halloween parties! Halloween themed food! Haunted Houses!
Unfortunately, Ibaraki is a bit lacking with Halloween stuff. Everyone usually goes to Tokyo for their Halloween festivities. In Mito though, there is a hotel that is running a Halloween Tea Time event all month long.
Hotel Terrace Garden Mito
The Terrace Garden Mito is located on the south exit of Mito station. You can't miss it. Walk past the BIC Camera and you will see it on your left. It is a really nice upscale hotel. When you walk into the hotel, turn left and you will see the restaurant. That is where the Halloween Tea Time is taking place.
We had made a reservation before hand and we're ready to try everything.
Tea Time Halloween Version
As you can see from the poster, this event runs until Halloween night. It is 3,300 yen per person which is a bit expensive, but you do get a lot of sweets. This Tea Time brings all you can eat scones, soup, a bunch of different desserts and sweets, sandwiches, and one pot of tea.
Inside
It was nice to see the restaurant get into the spirit of Halloween. You can check out this Halloween display at the entrance of the restaurant. The inside is very nice and feels elegant. I was in shorts and a shirt, and I felt a bit underdressed. But once we got to our table I didn't worry about that anymore.
Tea Time!
You have a lot of options for tea on the menu. There are teas from India, China, and Nepol on one page, and a bunch of fruit teas on the second page. That day, I ordered an Indian tea called Assam and my wife got the Orchard Fruit tea.
Assam was a nice strong tea and I was told to put some cream and sugar in it. I wasn't a fan of putting sugar in the Assam tea because the tea went really well with all the sweets I had.
My wife's tea didn't really taste fruity at first, but once it cooled down that fruity taste came through and it was quite good.
All you can eat scones!
You read that right, all you can eat scones. The scones are plain, chocolate, and walnut. Then for the spread you got blueberry, mango, and cream cheese. As far as the scones go, all of them are delicious. I highly recommend spreading some cream cheese on the walnut scone. The blueberry spread goes really well with the plain scone. The mango spread, I wasn't a fan. It was way to tangy and barely tasted like mango. The chocolate scone needs no spread. It is a masterpiece by itself. With melted gooey chocolate inside, it was perfect. The scones were great but time to move unto the sweets.
Bottom Plate
From the first picture on this post, you can see that we got the tea time double stacked plate thing (I have no idea what that is called). I will start with the bottom plate and work my way up.
Croquette Cream Burgers: Amazing. This may have been my favorite food item on the plate. The croquette has a good crunch to it and the delicious cream was just perfect.
Sandwiches: Lettuce, Tomato, ham and some sort of cream on it that was really good.
Pumpkin Quiche: Very tasty, the pumpkin slices on top were a little hard but overall delicious.
Pickles: They were good. Nothing extraordinary, but good.
Top Plate
The top plate brought more sweets.
The Apple Mousse: Very soft and creamy with very small pieces of apple in it. One of my favorites.
Macarons: Heart shaped macarons with chocolate inside. Not bad.
Pistachio Cake: Very creamy, heavy pistachio taste, and small little chocolate eyeballs on top.
Sweet Potato Tart: Delicious sweet potato flavor with a chocolate bat on top. Really good.
All the sweets, sandwiches, and food on these two plates were excellent. My wife and I were really enjoying our tea time.
Piano Plate
See how the plate is a small piano? Super cute right? This plate brought chocolate mousse and pumpkin pudding. The pumpkin pudding wasn't that bad but the chocolate mousse was fantastic. Chocolatey creamy flavor with whipped cream and strawberry jam. Perfect ending to our sweets marathon.
After we finished everything, my wife and I were beyond full. It took all my effort to finish the chocolate mousse but I am glad I did. So what did I think of this Halloween Tea Time?
I was delighted and disappointed.
Delighted because everything was delicious, the tea was great, and it was a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Disappointed because this has no right to call itself a Halloween Tea Time. The only Halloween food items were the sweet potato tart's chocolate bats and the pistachio cakes small chocolate eye balls. None of this is even close to Halloween and that really disappointed me.
The Ibaraki Eats Duo did enjoy our tea time but it was in no way shape or form Halloween themed. If you really want to enjoy a Halloween themed dinner, go to Hachi Cafe in Naka City. It has an excellent atmosphere, amazing Halloween themed food, and drinks. But if you are in the mood for tea and sweets, give Terrace Garden Mito's Tea Time a try. You will be full up on sweets, trust me.
Enjoy!

The Hitachi Naka location's party is on the 29th. Both locations will have great food, drinks, music and costumes. It will be a spooky fun night to remember.
