Let's keep burger month going my fellow burger lovers. I got one more place to share with all Ibarakians but especially my Tsukuba people. I tried this place on a Sunday night after the Tsukuba Nebuta Festival. My wife and I were in the mood for burgers. I fired up the old google maps and got a hit for a place called WikiWiki Burgers.
Burgers Cafe WikiWiki
WikiWiki is located in the Amakubo area of Tsukuba. The burger shop is between a tonkatsu place and a ramen shop. There is also an Indian restaurant next to the ramen shop that seems to have recently opened. Will have to check that out later.
The Ibaraki Eats Duo parked our car in front of WikiWiki and headed in. When we opened the door, we immediately got hit with that burger grill aroma.
Inside
Once inside, the staff showed us to our booth and gave us the menu. When we were ready to order, we had that call button that 99% of Japanese restaurants have. I looked around for a bit and figured that the restaurant was going for a Hawaiian burger place theme. I dig it. Everything looked nice and brand new. I thought this place just opened but it turns out WikiWiki has been around for two years.
The Menu
Great news my fellow Ibarakians! The menu is in both English and Japanese. There are a lot of burgers to choose from. I was really interested in the chili meat cheese burger, but that night I wanted something simple. So I went with the bacon cheeseburger.
Non Burger Menu
When you turn to the next page of the menu, you get a non burger section. Cesar salad, Cajun chicken, Fish and Chips (so much for Hawaiian theme). Then my wife asked me something I thought I would never hear in Ibaraki, "is chicken and waffles an American dish?" I double checked the menu and there it was. I told her it was an American dish and she decided to give that a try.
Caramel Shake
My wife ordered a caramel shake to go with her chicken and waffles. She tried the shake first and gave it the thumbs up. After I tried it, I had to agree. It was a good shake. Nothing spectacular but a good shake none the less. The ice cream in the shake was especially good. I know it is difficult to get good ice cream shakes in Ibaraki, but this place does them well.
Chicken and Waffles
The moment my wife had been waiting for had come. She poured maple syrup on her waffle, cut a piece of fried chicken and waffle, and got to chomping. She liked it and then let me have a try. The fried chicken was fantastic. Crispy fried skin on the outside with juicy delicious chicken on the inside. It was magnificent. The waffle...not so much. My wife and I were sure it was microwaved. It was soft and rubbery. If you didn't eat it with the chicken, it would have been a terrible meal. So WikiWiki, your fried chicken game is excellent but your waffle skills need work.
Onion Ring Set
I ordered onion rings with my burger and gave them a try first. These onion rings are legit onion rings. Crispy and delicious. I would definitely order these onion rings again. Hi-5 still holds the title for best onion rings, but WikiWiki's onion rings are pretty damn delicious.
Bacon Cheeseburger
Finally, we come to my burger. I took out the tomato because as I have explained, I hate tomatoes.
I bit into my burger and I got a delicious meat patty with gooey melted cheese, an amazing burger sauce, and big slices of tasty bacon. I was really enjoying my burger but half way through, the buns were failing. They became tough to tear through and didn't hold the burger together. In the end, I had to use my fingers to scoop out the meat patty from the bottom of the burger bag. Which is fine by me but extremely messy. That burger sauce though, finger licking good.
After we finished our burger and chicken waffles, my wife and I headed home with our bellies full and smiles on our faces. We didn't like everything about our meal but it was a delicious meal and we were quite satisfied. I do want to go back to WikiWiki and try their other burgers, but I hope they improve their buns a bit more.
So if you are around Amakubo in Tsukuba and have a craving for burgers, why not give Burgers Cafe WikiWiki a chance. Who knows, you might see me there, trying that chili meat cheese burger and enjoying some onion rings.
Enjoy!
