It is time to bring back Burger Month! For the whole month of August, I will be talking about burgers around Ibaraki. For my first post, I am going to talk about an extremely delicious burger event. The Drunken Duck's Burger Olympics!
The Burger Olympics Menu
There are 12 countries in the burger Olympics so there are 12 different burgers to try. When this post comes out the Mito location of the Drunken Duck with be in Pool B and the Hitachi Naka location will be in Pool A. All the burgers look great and if you want to see what all the burgers look like, check out all the pictures at the Drunken Duck's Instagram page:
In late July, the wife and I went to the Hitachi Naka Duck and were able to try three burgers from Pool B: The American Burger, The Brazilian Burger and the Mexican Burger.
The American Burger
First up, we have the American burger, my favorite burger of the night. You might be rolling your eyes and thinking "of course it is your favorite burger AMERICAN guy." Well yes, national pride does have a part in this but it was an extremely delicious burger. The burger comes with a beef patty, fried chicken, cheese, a special sauce and coleslaw. A beef patty with fried chicken? If that doesn't scream America, I don't know what does. The coleslaw mixed with whatever that special sauce was, was amazing. Biting into that burger and getting that mix plus fried chicken with beef was an out of body burger experience. I loved this burger and asked Jamie, the owner of the Drunken Duck, if the American burger was winning the burger Olympics. He informed me that the Dutch burger was number one at the moment. I was in shock and vowed to try the Dutch burger as soon as I could.
The Brazilian Burger
Even though I loved the American burger, that is not to say that the other burgers were not delicious. They were, I enjoyed all the burgers I had that night and the next one I am going to talk about is the Brazilian Burger. This burger comes with a churrasco seasoned beef patty, Brazilian sausage, cheese and herb verde mayo coleslaw. I took a bite out of this burger and was in burger bliss. The sausage with the cheese and beef patty were fantastic. The coleslaw was an added bonus but all the meat in the burger is what really stole the show.
The Mexican Burger
Finally, we have the Mexican burger. There is a lot going on in this burger. The burger comes with a beef patty, cheese, spicy tomato salsa, coleslaw, jalapeños,
guacamole, tomato, lettuce and corn chips. I recommend holding on to the burger as best you can because some of those things might slide out. The salsa will definitely drip down. The Mexican burger was great and it was the wife's favorite. She really liked how well the salsa went with everything else in the burger and I have to agree. The salsa wasn't too spicy but it did have a kick to it. The guacamole with the beef patty, jalapeños and cheese was an incredible combination. I was blown away by how great this burger was.
My ranking for that night has to be:
Gold: America
Silver: Mexico
Bronze: Brazil
I still have a ways to go though. I have only tried 3 out of the 12 burgers in the burger Olympics. When I go back to the Drunken Duck and try another burger, I will be sure to update this post when I do.
So, if you have an Olympic competitive spirit but are not an athlete (like me), why don't you compete to try all the burgers the Drunken Duck's Burger Olympics has to offer. Who knows, you might see me there, watching the games on the Duck's TV while wolfing down the Dutch burger and comparing it to my beloved American burger.
Enjoy!
Update!
I am sure you have all been watching the news. Corona numbers are up again and at the time of writing this post, five prefectures are under a state of emergency. Ibaraki numbers are also going up so Ibaraki will go into corona restrictions starting Friday August 6th. What does this mean? All restaurant establishments have to close by 8:00. That being the case, the Drunken Duck Hitachi Naka location will be closed from August 6th till August 19th. The Mito location will stay open but will have to close at 8:00.
I can't believe we are going through this AGAIN, and right before the Obon holidays. The good news is the Drunken Duck is extending the Burger Olympics event until September 5th. So after all the restrictions are lifted, you still have a chance to try these tasty burgers.
Stay safe everyone
